1. What's the difference between Registering a Domain Name vs Transferring a Domain Name?

If you are registering a new domain name, then you can register the domain name with us at the following rates:
1 year registration: $30 (only $30/year)
2 year registration: $45 (only $22.50/year)
3 year registration: $60 (only $20/year)
Additional Years: $15
(as low as $16.50/year!)

If you already own a domain name and are currently with a different registrar (like Network Solutions or Register.com, etc) and would like to take advantage of our low prices and great services, then you will first need to transfer your domain to us, then you will be able renew your domain name at our regular everyday low rates.

2. I have a few months left before my domain name expires, is it too early to Transfer my Domain Name to your servers?

It's never too early to transfer your domain names over to us... (that is after the mandatory 60 day waiting period is over for newly registered domain names).  In order to take advantage of our lower prices and extra services, it is best to NOT allow your domain name to expire and to transfer it BEFORE it is due to expire.

3. If I transfer my domain name registration to virtual-domain-names.com, will I lose any time credit?

No, you will not lose any time credit for transferring a domain name over to our servers.  In fact, by transferring your domain to us, you will be renewing your domain with us for 1 year thereby ADDING time credit to your previous expiration date.  For example, if you domain name expired February 14, 2001, then you new expiry date after transferring the domain would be February 14, 2002.

4. I just registered my domain name and attempted to log into the Update Registration Interface and received an error message "Invalid Username/Password Given: Authentication Error"... what does this mean?

You will not be able to update your domain name registration until the Transfer process is completed.  The transfer process is completed after both you and the previous registrar OK the transfer.  The transfer process can take anywhere from 5-10 business days to complete.  In short, until we become your new registrar, we don't have access to your domain name registration yet - but once the transfer is complete, we have access and thereby can give you access to directly modify your domain name registration.

5. I have just purchased a domain name from someone who registered with the domain name using you as the registrar.  How do I assume ownership of  my new domain name?

Our Update Domain Interface, has functionality to make transferring domain name ownership very easy...
a) Once you've made the financial arrangements, have original domain name owner transfer the domain to a new profile. They will create the new profile with a username and password of his choosing.

b) Have the previous domain name owner provide you with the username & password.

c)  If you have an existing profile with us, transfer the domain to it. If not, change the password of the profile.

d) You MUST change the Admin contact info, including email address, to yourself. You SHOULD change the Org & Billing contact as well. The Admin contact is the most important, & is considered the domain owner.

e) The domain is now yours, and under your control.

You'll find the transfer ownership page under Profile/Change Ownership by going to the Update Interface (or by clicking here). You can use this function to transfer the domain to a new account, or to an existing virtual-domain-names.com profile. If you're going to an existing virtual-domain-names.com profile, make sure to check "Move to an existing profile"

6. What typical problems would complicate a Domain Name Transfer?
A domain transfer can have problems, if the following events occur:

  • The domain name you are transferred has been with the current registrar for less than 60 days. You can calculate this from the domain's whois record.
  • If there is an outstanding balance due on the domain name that you are trying to transfer. If your domain is with Network Solutions, you can check payment status at payments.networksolutions.com.
  • The confirmation request email to the Admin Contract is not replied to before the tracking number expires. Transfer requests are assigned Tracking Numbers and each tracking number expires in approximately 7 days.  If the tracking number expires, we may need to reprocess your domain transfer request.
  • The Acknowledgement request from the current registrar was not properly filled out.  Note that most domain name transactions are automated and handled by computers, so if any information is not filled out correctly, the transfer request may be rejected.
  • You're not currently the Administrative Contact. If the confirmation email to transfer your domain does not go to your email account, this will cause a problem. You should first either modify your domain record with the current registrar so that you are listed as the domain administrator, or make arrangements with the person who is for confirming the transfer.

There should be no interruption of service during the domain name transfer because all technical dns information will be the same, the only information that we will directly change will be to name ourselves as Technical Contact

8. How long does it take to transfer a domain?

Transfers can take up to 5-10 business days after you started the transfer process and assuming that all information is in order.  Usually, your transfer will be complete 1-2 days following confirmation. It's a good idea to check your domain whois record before starting a transfer to ensure everything is in order.
